#6- A Special Edition of The Cornucopia
Melbourne to Victoria and Beyond: Your Special Edition Scoop of the Food Systems Scene
Regen Melbourne acknowledges and respects the Bunurong, Boon Wurrung and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung peoples of the Eastern Kulin Nation, which is now known as Melbourne. We extend these acknowledgements to all Traditional Owners across the State of Victoria. The food system knowledge, practices and deep wisdom of the First Nations people of this land guides, informs and drives our work.
šš¾ Hi Cornucopians!
We have news!
As many of you may know, The Cornucopia is a component of Regen Melbourneās food systems portfolio. A relatively new area of exploration for Regen Melbourne that officially commenced in July. Since then, we have delved deep into the heart of this complex landscape. We have chatted to, lunched with, and heard from a diverse range of food system actors - from non-profits to corporations - exploring issues ranging from food security to waste reduction.
Our findings, while concerning, may not surprise many of you. Our food system is under tremendous strain, struggling to nourish our population while depleting our natural resources. Despite the commendable efforts of passionate individuals and initiatives across Greater Melbourne and Victoria, we find ourselves at an impasse - and in some cases, regressing, as the cost of living crisis impacts both families and producers.
However, within these systemic challenges lie transformative opportunities. These issues can be reimagined as levers for change, requiring coordinated action and a fundamental shift in our approach to investment and intervention. These challenges and opportunities are explored in our new paper on sensemaking Greater Melbourneās food system.
As our loyal Cornucopia readers, you're getting the first look.
We're proposing four interconnected pathways to reimagine Greater Melbourne as a true foodie city ā one that's resilient, nutritious, equitable, and sustainable. These fields of action are just the beginning, from here we embark on the work with you all on creating a variety of responses that taken together can begin the transition to a foodie city we can all get behind.Ā
On the 8th of October from 11am-12pm, we will be hosting a virtual feedback session for you to share how this paper landed for you with the Regen Melbourne team directly. Bring any burning questions you have or things that you think we should know about! If you would like to attend, please register here.
Let's cook up a better food future for Greater Melbourne, together!
Expect some tasty morsels of global and local food system news in your inbox in the coming weeks as The Cornucopia returns to its regular publication.
